 CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background

Computer technology is indispensable in helping to improve the performance of a company today. Year after year people start using a computer that is currently known as the Personal Computer (PC). Originally Personal Computer used by each person and stand alone (stand alone). These computers are not connected to each other. But people then think that data processing is a stand-alone in the sense of a very slow and inefficient. For stand alone PC, the application program must be loaded onto each PC, and the process must move the PC. To improve the efficiency and minimize the time required then created a network that is currently known by the name of the computer network.
This network is composed by several methods known to the network topology. Some of which are known as the star of a network or network and many others.
To know more deeply, the paper will explain the types of network topology, its flaws and how to workarounds.

      1.2 Purpose
Based on the above background, this paper aims to find out about the types of network
topologies and their drawbacks and advantages.

BAB II
DISCUSSION

2.1  Definition and Types of Network Topology

Network topology is a rule or a way to connect one computer to another computer so as to form a network. The network topology can also be defined as a physical picture of the pattern of relationships between network components, which include servers, workstations, Hubs, and cabling.

2.2   Here are the types of network topologies:

2.2.1.  BUS Topology

Bus topology is the initial topology is used to connect a computer. In this topology each computer will be connected to a long cable with multiple terminals, and at the end of Kable must end with a terminator.

            BUS Topology Characteristics:
                        1. Node - nodes are connected in series along the cable, and the cable at                             both ends closed with a terminator.
                        2. Very simple to install.
                        3. Very economical in cost.
                        4. Data packets on a cable intersect each other.
                        5. Not required hub, which is much needed is Tconnector on each ethernet                             card.
                        6. Problem that often occurs is that if one node is damaged, then the whole                             network can be down, so that all nodes can not communicate in the                                                           network.

Picture  Bus Topology

Weakness Bus Topology
Advantages of Bus Topology
1. Traffic (traffic) would be very slow         crowded buses.

1.      Simple topology.
2. Each barrel connector that is used as the link weakens the electrical signal is sent, and most will block the signal to be received correctly.

2.      The cable used to connect a computer-bit computers or other equipment.
3. It is very difficult to troubleshoot on the bus.

3.      They cost less than other wiring arrangement.
4. Slower than the other topologies.
4.      Quite easy if we want to expand the network on a bus topology.

2.2.2.   STAR Topology

Star topology is a network that connects each node by using a centralized interface or called concentrator. Star topology network with an office in applications typically using an architecture host based system.

            Characteristics of Star Topology:
                        1. Each node communicates directly with the concentrator (HUB).

                        2. When each incoming data packet to consentrator (HUB) and then in                                             broadcast throughout very much connected nodes (ex. use 32 port hub),

then the performance of the network will be down.

                        3. Very easily developed.

                        4. If one ethernet card is broken, or one of the wires in the terminals broke                                       up, then to the overall network can still communicate or do not happen down                                 the entire network.

                        5. Type of cable used is usually the type of UTP.

                                      Picture Star Topology

Weakness Star Topology
Advantages of Star Topology
  1. Having a single point of error, lies in hub.Jika central hub fails, the entire network would fail to operate.
  1. Quite easy to change and add computers to the network using a star topology without disrupting on going network activity.
  1. Need more cable for all network cables to be pulled to one central point, so much more requires more cable than other network topologies
  1. If one computer in the network damaged then the computer will not make the entire network star die.
  1. The number of terminals is limited, depending on the existing ports on the hub.
  1. We can use several types of wires in the same network with a hub that can accommodate different types of cable.
  1. Dense data traffic may cause the network to work more slowly.
  1. Damage to one channel will affect the channel network and station adrift.

 2.2.3.    RING Topology
Ring Topology is a network topology form a series of dots , each of which is connected to two other points , so as to form a circular path to form a ring .
In a ring topology , each point / node serves as a repeater which will amplify the signal along the circulation , meaning that each device work together to receive a signal from the device before then pass them on to the device afterwards , the process of receiving and forwarding the data signal is aided by TOKEN.

TOKEN contains information along with the data from the source computer , then the token will pass through the point / node and will check whether the data is used by the information point / node in question , if yes then the token will provide the data requested by the node and then re-run to point / next node in the network . If not then the token will pass through the point / node while bringing the data to get to the point / the next node . This process continues until the data signal peak at the goal ./ the next node. This process continues until the data signal peak at the goal.
Or Ring topologies are used in a network topology that has high performance, network bandwidth for time-sensitive features such as video and audio, or when performance is needed when the computer is connected to the network in large numbers.

            Characteristics of Ring Topology:

            1. The nodes are connected in series along the cable, the network forms like circles.
            2. Very simple in layout such as the type of bus topology.
            3. Data packets can flow in one direction (left or to the right) so that collisions can be                         avoided.
            4. Faced the same problem with the bus topology, ie: if one node is damaged then                             the entire node can not communicate in the network
            5. Type of cable used is usually cable or UTP Patch Cable (IBM type 6).

Picture Topology Ring

Weakness Topology Ring

Advantages of Ring Topology
  1. If there is one computer in the ring fails, it will affect the whole network.
1.   Data flows in one direction so that the collision can be avoided.
  1. Increase or decrease will mess up the computer network.
2.  The data stream flows faster because it can serve data from the left or right of the server.
  1. It is difficult to reconfigure.
3.  Can serve the traffic flow data is solid, because data can be moved left or right.

2.2.4    TREE Topology / Topology HIERARCHICAL TREE
TREE Topology / Topology HIERARCHICAL TREE is also referred to as multilevel network topology, used for interconnection of central with different arrangements. Tree topology is the development of a star topology. At each Tingkai Tree topology or node will be attributable to the central or concentrator (Hub or Switch) is located at the beginning of Trafic series.

                Characteristics of Tree Topology :
      1. Characteristics of the tree topology similar to BUS Topology and Star Topology. So also with appliances, wires, and installation techniques. Therefore we will not discuss it in more detail. If the inter-hub connecting cable broke, the star network can still function, only the relationship with the  other tissues will be disrupted star.
        2.  At each branch connected to several terminals in the form of bus or branched again to be complicated.
         3.  Starting from a point called the head-end. From the head-end cable is pulled into several branches.

Picture TREE Topology / Topology HIERARCHICAL TREE

Weakness Topology Tree
Advantages of Tree Topology
  1. In large areas difficult to perform network maintenance.
1.       Scalable, level-level dibawah level utama dapat menambahkan node baru dengan mudah.
  1. Because this topology is a variant of the BUS topology if the cable backbone (main cable provider data stream) is damaged then the entire network will be down.
2.       Connections happen point to point.
  1. Data files can occur collisions (collision).
3.       Easy management for easy identification and isolation of faults in the network.
  1. More difficult to configure and install the cable from the other topologies.
4.       Easily developed.
  1. If one node is damaged, then the node is located at the bottom level will be broken.
5.      This topology is fairly effective on a smaller area, where the central computer can be connected to different other computer, and other computers can provide a connection to the computer at the center they serve.
  1. The cable used is becoming more widely so that required careful planning arrangements, including the layout of the room.

2.2.5 Loop topology
Loop topology is the topology in which the relationship between a serial terminal in the form of a closed loop and no one becomes the central terminal.

            Loop Topology Characteristics :

                        1. Is a cable that both ends are closed, where there are nodes along the cable.
                        2. Commonly used because it is simple in installation.
                        3. Signal cables pass through in both directions and possible collision.
                        4. The biggest problem when the cable broke. If one segment of cable                                                broken, then the whole network is interrupted.

Picture Loop Topology

Weakness Loop Topology
Advantages of Topology Loop
1.  Less reliable (not in accordance with the advancement of technology)

1. Installation and low maintenance
2.  If the nodes are damaged, will interfere with the communication of data to another node
2. All nodes have the same status
3.  If one computer is off, the other computers in the network can not be used.
3. All computers on the network have the same status.

CHAPTER III
CLOSING

            3.1 Conclusions

Network topology is, things that describe the geometric relationship between the basic elements making up the network are nodes, links and station.

In the definition of topology is divided into two, namely the physical topology (physical topology), which indicates the position of the physical cabling and topology logical (logical topology) that shows how a medium accessible by the host.

In a comparison between all the topologies that have been described previously, the most well-used topology is the star topology because if one computer is down does not affect the others and the tracking error is very fast and access to other computers more quickly and easily upgraded.
